Advantages of Owning a Dachshund

If you are considering getting a dog for yourself or your family you should consider owning a dachshund, which is one of the smaller dog breeds. Small dogs have become more popular in the public view lately, probably due to the fact that there have been quite a few celebrity appearances with smaller dogs. There are many advantages to having a small dog. Some of these include portability, ability to keep at home, fear of larger dogs, bonding, and maintenance.

Dachshunds can be taken pretty much anywhere. They are small enough to fit safely inside a special bag or large tote bag that is designed especially for small breeds of dogs. These can be found at your local pet store or over the Internet. Also, there are more and more restaurants and retail stores that are starting to let you take your small dog inside. This is definitely an advantage of owning a small dog.

Dachshunds are good pets because they do not take up much living space, making them perfect for apartment living. Many apartments only allow small dogs. Food costs are lower too, because dachshunds require less food than larger dogs do. The larger your dog, the more food you have to feed it (and the more comes out the other end!). This will save you money on your dog food bills. It could also save you money if you have to have your dog housed in a kennel or, if you have chosen one of the long haired types, to have them groomed. This also normally costs more, the larger the breed of dog. You may want to find out what any price differences might be from your local boarding kennel and groomer.

Providing you take time and care picking the right dog, dachshunds tend to be less threatening to young children and other pets that you may already have in the house. This is only true if your dachshund is properly socialized. Smaller dogs are less scary than larger dogs are when it comes to cats. Some small dogs can become aggressive; so do buy your dog from a reputable breeder where you can assess both parents for aggressive tendencies – especially if you have small children.

Animals tend to form closer bonds with the people that take care of them. These people become their people. This is possibly due to the size of the breed of the dachshund and the fact that you can take your dog almost anywhere with you. Smaller dogs seem less intimidating to people. This allows the owners to coddle and pamper them, and because of this bond they may be more protective than you would think.

One of the biggest advantages of owning a dachshund is that they are low maintenance. They do not need much exercise. Smaller dogs tend to shed less than the larger breed dogs. This results in fewer messes for you to clean up. You should still comb and groom your pet to insure that they are properly taken care of.

There is a lot of information available on the dachshund breed, but with a little bit of knowledge on the breed and enough room in your heart and home for loving an animal, you should find the dachshund to be a great pet for your family.
